Wikipedia Trail: Sleep Deprivation - Disorders of Consciousness

The first Wikipedia article I read was called "Sleep deprivation". My curiosity led me to this article as I completed a Learning by H.E.A.R.T. challenge this week which was all about "Sleep and Sleep Deprivation". The article that I reviewed highlighted various different affects from being sleep deprived. I found this topic very fascinating as I have a big interest in fitness and learning the best ways to achieve optimal performance. This is why this article caught my attention as it feeds into performance.

The second Wikipedia article I read was called "Microsleep". My curiosity led me to this article as when I was reading the first article, I noticed the word "Microsleep" which I had never head before. I was intrigued to find out what this term meant. The article defined the term like so "A micro-sleep (MS) is a temporary episode of sleep or drowsiness which may last for a fraction of a second or up to 30 seconds where an individual fails to respond to some arbitrary sensory input and becomes unconscious". I found this fascinating as I have definitely experienced this at some point in my life and I think commonly when I press snooze on my alarm after waking up in the morning.

The third Wikipedia article I read was called "Sleep". My curiosity led me to this article as when I was reading the second article, I seen that there was an external link to the word "Sleep". I was hoping by clicking this that I might find out something in relation to sleep I have never known before. I discovered that the human body has two distinct modes which it alternates between from when it comes to sleep. The two modes are REM sleep and non-REM sleep. I found it interesting to read about the differences between these two modes as I have never heard of them before.

The fourth Wikipedia article I read was called "Disorders of consciousness". My curiosity led me to this article as when I was reading the third article, I seen the term "Disorders of consciousness" and I was unsure of what that was. I was also intrigued to learn what this term meant or related to. I discovered that "Disorders of consciousness are medical conditions that inhibit consciousness". I also learnt about a "minimally conscious state" which is a disorder of consciousness. This is where a person "has intermittent periods of awareness and wakefulness".

I thought this was such an unusual place to end up from where I started. I am very happy to have learnt some new cool terms and facts along my Wikipedia trail. I can share some fun facts with my friends and family now.
