Week 9 Reading and Writing

The reading assignments are working okay for me. Ironically enough, one of the weeks that I decided to not do a reading ended up being one of the most important. I have been chasing my tail ever since because of it. I find some of the readings are a bit hard to understand when they talk about certain areas and games you have no knowledge of. This can make it difficult to understand what they are referring to.

My favourite reading so far was "Game Elements" which I completed in week 4. I found it very relate able as well as informative. I discovered new terms, learnt the benefits of having certain features in games as well as becoming aware of how even changing small features can lead for an entirely different game. I found that overall this was a very educational reading and was easy to engage with.

I think the reading notes do help me with creating my game. The readings inform me about many different aspects when making games and things to consider. This kind of knowledge is second to none especially when I make decision in regards to my own game. The notes help me understand what I might be getting into or how my game might change based on the decision I make. I wouldn't have looked at my game in various different ways if it wasn't for the readings.

I haven't really learnt new research strategies as far as I am aware. I tend to try look for the important parts of readings where a point is made and then try to understand the relevance of the point. I guess that could be some sort of improvement on my reading strategy but I do still find that a lot of the readings can be hard to quickly digest. This really does vary reading to reading and depends on what foundation knowledge I have on the subject beforehand.

I am not happy with my game project as I have still not properly started creating it yet. I have wrote a piece a while back called "Game Brainstorm" where I talked about various ideas I had. I talked about my various game ideas in the blog. I basically wrote the objectives and rules of each game idea but I viewed some other people’s blogs and panicked that I hadn't approached it the right way. I have struggled since then to decide on a game and to know how simple or advanced the game should be so I have struggled to decide on what type of game to start.

I also attempted to try develop my game on the latest version of Unity but eventually came to the conclusion that it was too time consuming as most video tutorials date back to before the current version and there seems to be a big difference in the updates. I'm going to get a start on something this week and try use the older version and hopefully I can get closer to creating a game.

I consider completing some high quality blogs/reflections to be one of my greatest accomplishments to date in this class. I would like to hopefully add a successful working game to the accomplishment list as well by the end of the semester.

I have chosen the picture above as my favourite picture from a previous reading. I chose this image as I feel it is a good representation of how I have handled this module and semester. I have looked back and reflected on some decisions I have made and learnt from them. I'm still not giving up as I hope if I work hard until the end of the semester that I will come out the other side.

I think I would get more out of the readings if there was a little bit less to do during the week. I think by maybe giving five core tasks to complete within in a week is a bit much. The readings can be hard to understand with just one or two reads. I have even read some readings multiple times and struggled to understand them. I think if the deadlines were slightly altered then I wouldn’t be as pressured to get it completed and therefore could spend more time focusing on understanding the readings. I find that sometimes I become pressured into submitting something rather than completely understanding the reading.
